1-2-3: AI Decentralization

1 idea, 2 resources, and 3 tools for this week.

Welcome to Ponderer's 27th edition.

Happy Sunday!

It has been a pondering-worthy 48 hours (or so) with all the OpenAI drama, the jokes, heartfelt tweets, and of course, the plethora of assumption-based posts. We tried not to get sucked in but lucky for you, we failed miserably.

Here are 1 idea to ponder, 2 resources to skill up, and 3 tools to try out.

Let’s do it.

Soon, we’ll be launching 🍉 Pixels, a weekly newsletter that will deliver newsletter design tips for non-designers. If you like the sound of that...

The Big Idea

“If you’re in AI, pivot to decentralization.” — Balaji

This statement by Balaji reminds us of a fundamental truth:

“If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” In other words, “those who stand for nothing, fall for everything.”

In case you have been disconnected from all the noise lately—and haven’t heard the news, here is the gist of it: Sam Altman got fired from OpenAI.

“Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

This is the reason behind Balaji’s AI decentralization idea.

He then suggested, “Llama 2 is a good place to start.

He then continued to share his perspective:

“Everyone in AI just got an object lesson in the need for (a) sovereignty over your company, (b) decentralization of your technology, and (c) independence from statist ideology. For effective acceleration, we need decentralization!

Now is when everyone sees the risk of a single point of failure. If the board can do this to Sam, they can do it to any OpenAI customer. Hence, decentralize AI.”

Problem: the future of AI is under threat of over-centralization.
